List price minus COGS is a fantasy. The real margin is what's left after the platform, the carrier and the border take their cut.
What eats the margin
A $29.99 list price with a $7.50 COGS looks like ~75% margin — until the fees land. Amazon takes a referral fee (8–20% by category) plus FBA fulfilment; Shopify skips the referral but charges a payment fee (~2.9% + $0.30); then there's shipping, import duty/landed cost, PPC and a returns allowance. This calculator stacks all of them so the net number is honest.
Reverse-engineer your price
