Profit Margin Calculator for Amazon FBM

No FBA fee โ€” but every box you ship yourself has a real cost. Model the referral fee plus your carrier shipping, packaging, pick & pack labor and return handling for an honest self-fulfilled margin.

FBM's hidden cost lines

When you drop FBA, Amazon's fee disappears โ€” and your own operating costs take its place.

With FBM you still pay Amazon's referral fee (8โ€“20% by category) โ€” but there's no FBA fulfilment fee and no FBA storage. Instead you carry:

  • Carrier shipping to the buyer โ€” USPS / UPS / FedEx. For small, light items this is often more than FBA; for large or heavy goods it can be less.
  • Packaging & materials โ€” boxes, void fill, tape, branded inserts.
  • Pick & pack labor โ€” the most underestimated line. Even 10 minutes at $15/hr is $2.50 per order.
  • Return handling โ€” you pay the return label and reprocess (or discount) the item yourself.

FBM can beat FBA for oversized, slow-moving or fragile products where you control shipping โ€” but only if you actually enter these lines. Leave them at zero and the margin is a fantasy.

Worked example

Price $29.99, COGS $7.50, carrier to buyer $5.50, packaging $0.80, labor $2.00, return handling $3.00, landed $0, PPC $2.00, returns 3%, on Home & Kitchen (15% referral):

LineAmount
Referral fee (15%)$4.50
Carrier shipping to buyer$5.50
Packaging$0.80
Pick & pack labor$2.00
Return handling$3.00
COGS + PPC + landed$9.50
Returns allowance (3%)$0.90
Net profit / unit$3.79 (12.6% margin)

Same product on Amazon FBA nets ~$6.44/unit here โ€” FBM's shipping and labor are the gap. Run both before choosing fulfilment.

Amazon FBM โ€” FAQ

Do I still pay Amazon's referral fee with FBM?
Yes. The referral fee is charged on the sale regardless of fulfilment. FBM only removes the FBA fulfilment fee and storage โ€” your own shipping, packaging, labor and return handling replace them.
Why are there no FBA presets here?
Because there's no FBA fee. Enter your real carrier rate, packaging, labor and return-handling costs instead โ€” those are what FBM actually costs.
When does FBM beat FBA?
Often for oversized, heavy, slow-moving or fragile items where you can negotiate cheap carrier rates or need custom packaging. For small, fast-moving standard goods, FBA usually wins on fulfilment cost and Buy Box eligibility.
What about returns?
With FBM you pay the return label and reprocess the item yourself โ€” modeled by the return-handling line โ€” on top of the refunded revenue captured by the returns allowance.
