Profit Margin Calculator for Shopify

Shopify charges no referral fee โ€” but the payment fee, your shipping and handling, and the cost of returns still take a cut. Pick your store country, Shopify plan, payment method and fulfilment mode above and the rate updates live; then model detailed returns, discounts, chargebacks, app-fee amortization and FX for the real net margin and monthly profit on your store.

Shopify's lean fee stack

No marketplace cut โ€” just the cost of getting paid and getting it shipped.

Unlike Amazon, Shopify takes no referral fee. You pay a payment fee that depends on what you pick above: the store country (Shopify Payments is ~2.9% + $0.30 in the US but ~1.5% in the EU), the Shopify plan (Basic โ†’ Advanced drops the US rate from 2.9% to 2.5%), and the payment method. Using Stripe or PayPal also triggers Shopify's third-party surcharge (2.0% on Basic, 0.6% on Advanced) on top of the gateway's own rate.

Note: Shopify Payments is not available in mainland China. Cross-border sellers from mainland China usually register a Hong Kong entity to use Shopify Payments โ€” select Hong Kong as the store country above to apply the official Hong Kong rates (Basic 3.3% + HK$2.35).

Beyond the fee, the real margin is eaten by returns (a rate %, return shipping and the share of COGS you can't resell), discounts, chargebacks (a rate % plus a per-incident fee), app-fee amortization (your monthly apps spread across orders) and FX conversion on international sales. The fulfilment mode (self / 3PL / dropship) relabels and resets the handling cost, and a monthly profit projection scales net/unit by your order volume.

Worked example

Defaults shown: United States ยท Basic ยท Shopify Payments ยท Self-fulfil. Price $29.99, COGS $7.50, shipping $3.50, handling / fulfilment $4.75, landed $0, PPC $2.00, returns 3% (100% restock loss, $3.50 return ship), chargeback 0.5% ($15 fee), payment fee 2.9% + $0.30 โ€” these are the exact inputs the calculator loads with:

LineAmount
Payment fee (2.9% + $0.30)$1.17
Shipping to customer$3.50
Handling / fulfilment$4.75
COGS (net of 3% returns)$7.28
PPC$2.00
Returns (3% ร— $11.00)$0.33
Chargeback (0.5% ร— $44.99)$0.22
Net profit / unit$9.85 (33.8% margin)

No referral fee means a higher headline margin than Amazon โ€” but only if your shipping, handling and returns are real, not zero. Switch the country, plan, payment method or fulfilment mode above and watch the fee and net move with it.

Shopify โ€” FAQ

Why is there no referral fee?
Shopify is your own storefront, not a marketplace that takes a cut of each sale. You only pay the payment processor (Shopify Payments or a gateway) and your own fulfilment costs.
What is the payment fee and why does it change?
The payment fee = a % of the order plus a fixed per-order amount. It changes with the country (Shopify Payments is ~2.9% + $0.30 in the US vs ~1.5% in the EU), the Shopify plan (Basic 2.9% โ†’ Advanced 2.5% in the US), and the payment method you pick. Rates shown are indicative 2026 published figures โ€” confirm in your Shopify admin.
Does using Stripe or PayPal cost more?
Yes. Shopify adds a third-party payment surcharge when you don't use Shopify Payments: 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Shopify/Grow, 0.6% on Advanced/Plus. So Stripe/PayPal = the gateway's own rate plus that surcharge. Pick "Other" to enter a custom % and fixed fee.
Can I use this for mainland China?
Yes โ€” pick Mainland China as the store country. Shopify Payments and Stripe are not available to mainland-China merchants, so the calculator only offers third-party gateways: PayPal (cross-border 4.40% + Shopify's plan surcharge + $0.30) or Other to enter a local gateway's rate (e.g. PingPong / LianLian). No Shopify Payments rate is shown because none exists.
How are returns modelled?
Enter a return rate %, the return shipping per returned unit, and the restock loss % (how much of COGS you can't recover on a return). The calculator keeps only the revenue from non-returned orders and adds the extra cost of returns โ€” so a 3% return rate genuinely lowers your net, not just a flat allowance.
What about discounts and chargebacks?
A discount % reduces the realized revenue (it's reflected in the revenue figure, not double-counted). A chargeback rate % plus a per-incident chargeback fee (~$15) is costed on the share of orders that get disputed. Both are editable so the margin reflects reality.
What are app fees, FX and the monthly profit line?
Your monthly app fees are spread across your monthly orders into a per-order cost. FX conversion applies the conversion fee to your international sales %. With a monthly order volume entered, the calculator projects monthly and annual profit from the net/unit.
What does the fulfilment mode selector do?
It relabels and resets the handling/fulfilment cost for self-fulfil (you pack & ship), 3PL / warehouse (per-unit pick-pack-store), or dropship / print-on-demand (supplier charges this). You can still override the number afterwards.
Should shipping be zero if I offer free shipping?
No โ€” "free shipping" means you absorb the cost. Enter the real per-unit shipping so the margin reflects what you actually pay to deliver the order.
