How EPR packaging weight works

EU/UK EPR fees are partly driven by the weight of packaging you place on the market. Estimate it per SKU before you register.

What EPR weight is

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) makes the seller responsible for end-of-life packaging. Fees in many schemes scale with material weight, so knowing the grams of cardboard, plastic, foam and metal per shipment is the first step to a correct declaration. The method

Packaging is a shell, not a solid block, so its weight comes from the area of material used — not from the volume the box encloses. The packaging trade measures this as grammage (grams per square metre), and that is what EPR schemes bill against.

  • Pick each component's material and its form — box, bag or flat sheet.
  • Enter the dimensions in cm and the quantity.
  • The unfolded area depends on the form:
    Box = 2 × (LW + LH + WH)  ·  Bag = 2 × LW  ·  Sheet = LW
  • Component weight (g) = area (cm²) ÷ 10,000 × grammage (g/m²).
  • Sum the components for total packaging weight per SKU.

A common mistake is multiplying length × width × height by a material density. That treats the box as a solid lump of fibre and overstates the weight by roughly twenty times.
