Walmart GS1 Digital Link QR Generator
Sunrise 2027 is coming: retail POS will read 2D barcodes. Generate a GS1 Digital Link QR from your GTIN — one code that scans at the register and opens product info on a phone.
What is a GS1 Digital Link QR code?
GS1 Sunrise 2027 asks retailers' point-of-sale systems to read 2D barcodes by the end of 2027, and the recommended format is a QR or Data Matrix carrying a GS1 Digital Link URI — a web address that encodes the GTIN (and optionally lot, batch, expiry or serial). The same code scans at the register (POS extracts the GTIN) and on a phone (opens product info). This generator builds a GS1 Digital Link QR from your GTIN — dual-marking ready for the transition.

How the GS1 Digital Link URI is built
A GS1 Digital Link QR encodes a web URI, not raw data. Every field in this tool maps to a GS1 Application Identifier inside that URI.
The numbers it works with
The core of the URI is the GTIN under AI 01, always padded to 14 digits (a 12-digit UPC or 13-digit EAN is zero-filled). Optional fields append in standard order: AI 10 for lot/batch, AI 17 for expiry (as YYMMDD, six digits), AI 21 for serial. The result looks like https://id.gs1.org/01/00123456789012/10/BATCH/17/261231/21/SN123.
The formula
URI = https://{resolver domain}/01/{14-digit GTIN}[/10/{lot}][/17/{YYMMDD}][/21/{serial}]. The GS1 check digit is verified and flagged if wrong — the code still generates for testing, but a bad digit will fail in retail systems.
Where the numbers come from
The AI structure and the 14-digit GTIN rule come from the GS1 Digital Link standard. id.gs1.org only resolves GTINs whose company prefix has a registered Digital Link resolver; a branded domain option is available for sellers who run their own resolver. Sunrise 2027 is the industry target for retail POS to read 2D barcodes.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is the industry's (voluntary but near-universal) goal for retail POS to read 2D barcodes by end of 2027. The compliant formats are GS1 DataMatrix and QR with GS1 Digital Link. During the transition, products carry both the existing 1D UPC/EAN and a 2D code (dual marking) — the 2D symbol should sit within 50 mm of the linear barcode. A Digital Link URI looks like https://id.gs1.org/01/01234567890128 (01 = GTIN, then 14 digits). Source: GS1 2D POS Implementation Guideline.
Walmart GS1 Digital Link QR Generator — FAQ
Is Sunrise 2027 mandatory?
It is a voluntary industry initiative — GS1 explicitly says linear barcodes are not being retired and there is no sunset of UPC/EAN. But major retailers are aligning their POS to the timeline, making 2D readiness practically unavoidable for brands selling through retail.
What data goes in the QR?
At minimum the GTIN (AI 01). You can add lot/batch (AI 10), expiry (AI 17), serial (AI 21) and more. The more you encode, the richer traceability and recall handling — but keep it to what your packaging process can reliably print.
Where should the QR sit on pack?
GS1 recommends placing the 2D symbol within 50 mm of the linear barcode during the dual-marking transition, so checkout staff can scan one location. Symbol size and quiet zone follow the GS1 General Specifications.
Is a QR with GS1 Digital Link the only option?
No — GS1 DataMatrix and DataMatrix with Digital Link are also compliant. QR is the common consumer-facing choice because phones scan it natively; DataMatrix is the compact/healthcare choice. This generator builds the QR form.
