What UK sellers pay
Etsy's base fees are the same for everyone. There's a £0.20 listing fee per item, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item, shipping and gift wrap, and a payment-processing fee. For a UK bank account that processing fee comes to 4% + £0.20. On top of those, UK sellers owe two country-specific charges: a 0.48% regulatory operating fee (it applies because your bank is in the UK) and 20% VAT on Etsy's fees, the UK standard rate. If you list in a currency other than your payout currency you'll also lose 2.5% to conversion, and any order that arrives through Offsite Ads adds 12–15% (capped at $100).
| Fee | UK rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | £0.20 | per item, per listing |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | of price + shipping + gift wrap |
| Payment processing | 4% + £0.20 | domestic UK rate |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.48% | UK bank account only |
| VAT on fees | 20% | UK standard VAT; waived with a VAT ID |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | if listing & payout currency differ |
| Offsite Ads | 12–15% | capped at $100 per order |
Worked example — a £25 order
A UK seller lists an item at £25 with £5 shipping, no Offsite Ads and no VAT ID registered:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order total | £30.00 |
| Listing fee | £0.20 |
| Transaction fee (6.5%) | £1.95 |
| Payment processing (4% + £0.20) | £1.40 |
| Regulatory operating fee (0.48%) | £0.14 |
| VAT on fees (20%) | £0.74 |
| Net to you | £25.57 (85.2%) |
Switch on Offsite Ads for this order and the charge lands around £5.40 once VAT is included (15% of the total, plus 20% on the fee itself), pulling net down to about £20.20. The calculator below lets you try every combination.
Pricing tip for UK sellers
Etsy tacks 20% VAT onto its own fees, so your real cost sits well above the headline 6.5% transaction fee. Price in both that VAT and the 0.48% regulatory fee from the start, then flip the VAT-ID toggle to see what you save once you're registered.
UK seller FAQs
The UK-specific questions before you price.
Do UK Etsy sellers pay VAT on Etsy's fees?+
Yes. Etsy adds 20% VAT, the UK standard rate, to the fees it charges you. That's on top of any VAT on the item itself. Hand Etsy a valid VAT ID and that fee VAT goes away, because UK sellers fall under the reverse-charge rules. Flip the "I have a VAT ID" switch in the calculator to see it.
What is the UK regulatory operating fee?+
It's 0.48% of each order, charged only to sellers whose bank account is in the United Kingdom, to cover Etsy's local compliance costs. Sellers in countries not on Etsy's list (e.g. Germany, Australia) pay zero.
Why is my payment-processing fee 4% + £0.20?+
That is Etsy's published domestic UK rate for payment processing. It applies to the full order total (item + shipping + gift wrap), the same base the 6.5% transaction fee uses.
Can I avoid the 20% VAT on fees?+
Yes — register a valid VAT ID with Etsy. The UK is one of the countries where a registered VAT ID exempts seller-fee VAT, so the calculator's VAT-ID toggle removes it.

All amounts are in your payout currency. Etsy's $0.20 listing fee is published in USD and converted to your currency at the market rate — shown here as the equivalent local amount. Offsite Ads are capped at US$100 per order.

United Kingdom tax context for Etsy sellers
UK VAT and Etsy
You only register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes the £85,000 threshold (HMRC). Below it you're not required to charge VAT, but you can still voluntarily register — which is what lets you hand Etsy a VAT ID and drop the fee VAT. Non-UK sellers shipping to British buyers may also owe UK VAT on the goods themselves once they cross the £135 import threshold.
The 0.48% regulatory operating fee is separate from VAT: it funds Etsy's compliance work in the UK and applies purely because your payout bank is here.
