CBM Calculator for China → USA
Work out the cubic metres of your shipment, the LCL cost per CBM (West Coast vs East Coast) and how many cartons fit in a 20ft or 40ft container — already pre-loaded with a sample China-to-US booking.
Key takeaways
- LCL from China to the US runs roughly $30–75 /CBM (West Coast cheaper than East Coast) in 2026 example rates.
- Chargeable volume is the greater of CBM and weight/1000 (the W/M rule) — light, bulky cargo pays on size.
- Below ~15 CBM, LCL usually beats a 20ft FCL; above it, a full container turns cheaper.
- A 20ft box holds about 28 CBM usable; a 40ft HC about 68 CBM.

| Lane | Example rate | Typical minimum |
|---|---|---|
| China → US West Coast (LA / Long Beach) | $30–60 /CBM | ~$50 /shipment |
| China → US East Coast (NY / Savannah) | $40–75 /CBM | ~$60 /shipment |

The calculator below is pre-set to the West Coast lane at ~$45/CBM with a $50 minimum. Switch the lane to model the East Coast, or type your forwarder's rate in the custom field.
Worked example — 50 cartons to the US
Each carton 60 × 40 × 40 cm, 18 kg.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Per-carton volume | 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.096 m³ |
| Total volume (× 50) | 4.80 CBM |
| Total weight (× 50) | 900 kg → 0.90 CBM-equivalent |
| Chargeable volume (W/M rule) | 4.80 CBM (volume wins) |
| LCL cost @ $45/CBM (West) | 4.80 × 45 = $216 |
| LCL cost @ $58/CBM (East) | 4.80 × 58 = $278 |
| 20ft container fill | 4.80 / 28 ≈ 17% used |
Because the cargo is light for its size, the carrier bills on volume (CBM), not weight — that is the W/M rule. At 4.8 CBM, LCL is the right call; a full container only pays off above roughly 15 CBM.
China → USA shipping FAQs
The freight questions before you book.
How much is LCL shipping from China to the USA per CBM?+
Example 2026 rates run about $30–60 /CBM to the US West Coast (Los Angeles/Long Beach) and $40–75 /CBM to the East Coast (New York/Savannah), often with a minimum charge around $50–60 per shipment. These are illustrations only — your forwarder's quote sets the real number.
CBM or weight — which does the carrier charge me on?+
On LCL the carrier charges the greater of the two: cubic meters (CBM) or actual weight in tonnes (weight/1000). That's the W/M (weight or measurement) rule. A light but bulky carton pays on its CBM; a dense, heavy carton pays on its weight.
When is a full container (FCL) cheaper than LCL?+
As a rule of thumb, once your goods pass about 15 CBM the per-unit cost of a 20ft FCL starts beating LCL. The calculator's container-utilisation bar shows the break-even as you add cartons.
How many cartons fit in a container from China to the USA?+
A 20ft container gives roughly 28 CBM of usable space (about 25–26 CBM packed), a 40ft about 58 CBM, and a 40ft High Cube about 68 CBM. Divide your per-carton CBM into those to size the shipment.

Rates are example ranges for planning only. LCL is billed on the greater of volume (1 CBM = 1,000 kg) and weight — the W/M rule. Confirm the firm quote with your freight forwarder.
Container counts are theoretical stacking estimates at the load factor above. Real loading usually runs 80–90% after pallets and carton shape. LCL costs are planning estimates only. Confirm both with your freight forwarder before booking.
